Spotlight on New Technology

A Recognition Program for OTC Exhibitors

For much of its existence, the oil and gas industry has pushed the limits of innovation. Through hard work, creativity and “out-of-the-box” thinking, extraordinary new technologies have been developed to find and produce offshore oil and natural gas.

The Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) recognizes these forward thinking solutions with the Spotlight on New Technology award. Initiated by the OTC Board of Directors in 2004, Spotlight on New Technology gives exhibiting companies an opportunity to present their newest and most advanced technologies to more than 50,000 industry leaders. All current OTC exhibitors are eligible to participate in the program.

Requirements

To be considered for the Spotlight on New Technology program, technology must meet four key criteria.

New and Innovative. The technology must be less than two years old. Age is based upon the first time the technology is used in a full-scale application or is announced or advertised in a conference, press release or trade journal. If previously advertised at OTC, it must not have been displayed for more than one conference. The technology must not be in violation of any known patents.

Proven. The technology must be proven, either through full-scale application or successful prototype testing. For example, a proposed new type of equipment in the design stage would not be considered applicable to this program.

Broad Interest. The technology must have broad interest and appeal for the industry. For example, a new type of valve would not be considered new technology or of broad interest if it were simply a replacement of a previous valve at lower cost. However, the new valve might be considered to have broad interest if it had the potential to change the way in which valves were used or impact the wider system that utilized the valve.

Significant Impact. The technology must provide significant benefits beyond existing technologies. For example, an improvement in efficiency of an existing motor would not be considered new technology unless it had the potential to change the way in which the motor would be utilized in the industry.
